Electrical Estimating or Job Management Software: Where Does JSI Fit?

Three different software jobs, and a practical way to choose the right tool for your electrical business.

By Rob TheodoridisJust Send It AI

Quick answer: electrical estimating software helps turn quantities, labour and material costs into a price. Job management software helps organise delivery, such as scheduling and job records. JSI fits the site-description-to-quote part of that workflow, with business-rate settings, quote documents and client responses. Choose JSI for that quoting need, not on the assumption that it replaces specialist plan takeoff or every job-management function.

Software labels overlap. Some products combine several functions, while others specialise. This guide explains the differences rather than ranking products. It is written by JSI's founder and is not an independent software review.

What is electrical takeoff?

Takeoff is the process of counting or measuring what a project needs from drawings: fittings, outlets, cable routes, equipment and other quantities. Digital takeoff software helps organise those measurements, sometimes with symbols, assemblies and pricing connections.

Groundplan's electrical estimating page is an example of software positioning built around drawings and takeoff. That is a different starting point from describing a residential job after visiting the property.

If your work mainly arrives as tender drawings and schedules, assess a tool's drawing measurement and quantity-management functions directly. Do not infer those capabilities from the words "AI quoting".

What is electrical estimating?

Estimating prices the work. It combines quantities with labour allowances, material costs, overhead recovery, risk and the commercial terms of the proposed job.

A quantity count is not a complete estimate. Equally, a neatly written estimate is not proof that every quantity was measured. Ask where each number came from and what still needs checking.

For a small site-assessed job, a description and photos may be the starting information. For a commercial tender, drawings, specifications and addenda may be essential. The right process depends on the project.

What is job management software?

Job management concerns how work is organised after, and sometimes before, the quote. Depending on the product, that can include scheduling, crew allocation, timesheets, purchase orders, recurring maintenance and invoicing.

Quoting functions within a job-management product may be sufficient for your business. Check them using your own workflow rather than assuming a specialist tool is always necessary.

Why consider JSI as your quoting tool?

JSI is relevant when your bottleneck is turning information from a site visit into a proposal the client can review:

  • The quote input accepts descriptions and site media.
  • The Rate Card calculator helps set business rates using costs, income targets and working capacity.
  • Generated scope and estimate data can be presented in client and internal PDFs.
  • The app includes sending to the client and a public accept or decline page.
  • Quote status is available through its jobs records.

JSI also has a Wiring Rules Assistant, but that is decision support, not compliance certification. Stored estimate data can support price-tier presentation; do not assume every quote contains three independently engineered design options.

The reason to choose JSI is the fit of those connected quoting tasks. This is not a claim that it contains a full drawing-takeoff suite, replaces your accountant or provides every scheduling function your crew needs.

What should you check before adding another subscription?

Write down the actual missing task. "Our quotes take too long to prepare" is useful. "We need more software" is not.

  1. Test one familiar job from input to the final client document.
  2. Check where your business rates and material allowances are set.
  3. Confirm how amendments and client responses are recorded.
  4. Check which information must be copied into your existing system.
  5. Verify any claimed integration in the account you will use.

Do not buy an assumed accounting connection or automatic wholesaler feed because it appears on a future-features page. Confirm current availability first. Compare today's subscription terms on JSI's pricing page.

Choose around the work, not the label

For drawing-heavy tender work, prioritise proven takeoff and estimating requirements. For organising a crew, prioritise scheduling and delivery needs. For site-based electrical quotes, trial JSI against a job you know well.

You may need one tool or a combination. The goal is fewer gaps and less duplicate entry, not the largest collection of subscriptions.

Frequently asked questions

Is electrical estimating software the same as job management software?

No. Estimating centres on building a price from scope, quantities and costs. Job management centres on organising the work. Products may overlap, so verify the specific functions you need.

Does JSI replace electrical drawing takeoff software?

This guide does not establish JSI as a specialist drawing-takeoff tool. Its relevant workflow starts with job descriptions and site media. Check drawing measurement needs separately before choosing software.

When should an electrician choose JSI?

Consider JSI when preparing and communicating site-based electrical quotes is the missing task. Trial its rate settings, quote documents, client responses and status records against a familiar job.

Should I assume JSI integrates with my accounting software?

No. Confirm the exact connection and its current availability before relying on it. A feature mentioned on a roadmap is not evidence that your account already supports it.
